ATH strategy comparisons

Trading styles use different assumptions about how prices behave. Comparing those assumptions is more useful than choosing a method from its name or a successful chart example.

Continuation and reversal start from different hypotheses

A breakout method investigates continuation beyond a reference area. A mean-reversion method investigates movement back toward a reference value. A range method focuses on behavior within boundaries. The same price can be interpreted differently under each hypothesis.

Use comparable evidence

Compare the same assets, dates, starting assumptions and cost treatment. A high trade count is not evidence of higher quality, and a high win rate can coexist with large losses. Review the distribution of outcomes and drawdowns, not only an average or a selected winning period.

Separate analysis from promotion

A scanner organizes observations; a strategy adds decision and risk rules. Referral rewards are a separate commercial incentive. Neither a high scanner score nor a welcome offer establishes that a trading style is profitable or suitable for a particular person.

EXAMPLE, NOT A TRADE IDEA

Illustrative example

One method has frequent small gains and occasional large losses; another loses more often but has different payoff sizes. Comparing only their win rates hides that difference. Costs, exposure and the size of losses belong in the comparison.

Reading checklist

  • Compare identical periods and realistic transaction costs.
  • Read losses and drawdowns alongside win rates and returns.

Questions answered

ATH breakout vs trend following

ATH breakout trading focuses on the moment price clears a historical high. Trend following can enter later and stay with the broader move.

ATH breakout vs range trading

Range trading buys support and sells resistance inside a sideways market. ATH breakout trading looks for price to leave the old range completely.

ATH breakout vs mean reversion

Mean reversion expects price to return toward an average. ATH breakout trading expects strength to continue after price clears a major level.

ATH signals vs pump signals

ATH signals are based on price relative to historical highs. Pump signals often focus on sudden short-term movement and can be much noisier.

ATH signals vs breakout scanners

ATH signals are a specific type of breakout scan focused on historical highs. General breakout scanners may include ranges, trendlines, and other levels.
